Sirman on the Mount

Quote of the Week --
"Human Dignity is like God, or the perfect blowjob -- it's always some guy talking about how it happened to a friend of his; it never actually happens to you."

The final book of Narnia, you're a sometimes disturbing story about the end of the world and the beginning of a new one. Your characters include an evil monkey, a misguided donkey, stubborn dwarves and all the human characters from the previous books. You manage to be heartbreaking and beautiful at once.

Find out which Chronicles of Narnia book you are.

If Captured, Never Let 'Em Give You To The Women
Ms. Coulter begs to inform John Carroll, Editor of the La-La Times, that he is full of shit:
"If liberals won't move on from the prison abuse photos calculated to incite hatred toward the very troops liberals loudly claim to "support," I'm not moving on from the fact that the editor of the Los Angeles Times, John Carroll, is instructing journalists on ethics. The editor of the Los Angeles Times telling reporters how to behave ethically is a complete contradiction, like ... oh, I don't know ... giving Yasser Arafat a Nobel Peace Prize or something. You know, just patently silly."

Sivits Gets A Year
"Sivits, who pleaded guilty to four abuse charges, broke down in tears as he apologized for taking pictures of naked Iraqi prisoners being humiliated."

``I'd like to apologize to the Iraqi people and those detainees,'' he said in his statement. ``I should have protected those detainees, not taken the photos.''

Archbishop Chaput writes a fairly good column on the right to have faith inform our political choices.

Abp. Chaput seems a fairly complex guy. On one hand, he hasn't hesitated to ID the latest Catholic/Political controversy as a non-starter. On the other hand, we have his attitude of contempt and condescending scorn toward any who would dare to criticize a bishop. I don't know what his real opinion is, but it appears that he believes bishops to be beyond criticism from the simple, unwashed. I guess it demonstrates that you can be orthodox, and still be an enemy of truth.

Victims Unseen

Pretty Awsome article by Anthony Esolen from March's Crisis:
"At the most vulnerable time of his life, as he tries to steer that most perilous strait, he is corrupted not only in his body but in his being, in his manhood, by the very “man,” the Father, who seemed to promise to him safe passage. Does he wish he had been raped? Talk to some, and they will say they wish they had been strangled."

Unlike many people, like say, that insufferable asshole Richard John Neuhaus with his ponderous tut-tutting and faux compassion, this guy actually gets it.

Best Damned News I've Heard All Day
Reuters, NBC Staff Abused by U.S. Troops in Iraq
"U.S. forces beat three Iraqis working for Reuters and subjected them to sexual and religious taunts and humiliation during their detention last January in a military camp near Falluja, the three said Tuesday...

...Two of the three Reuters staff said they had been forced to insert a finger into their anus and then lick it, and were forced to put shoes in their mouths, particularly humiliating in Arab culture."
I call Bullshit. Grunts aren't going to waste time with fingers and shoes. Now, posing them as master buffa's (a concept hardly alien to arabs, ask T.E. Lawrence), that I can believe, even without photographic proof.

Might I ask a question?
Two of my favorite writers, Kathy Shaidle and James Lileks (I think it's pronounced "Jonze") have taken time out of their busy schedules to respond to Antonia's latest work of self-reverential fiction.

Question: Why?

It's not as though the silly twit is that interesting, or even a good writer. She's apparently burdened with the misapprehension that we've never met an asshole before and would like to rescue us from this condition. She's just another drone from that polite little, semi-communist neighborhood to the north; the one everybody (rightfully) ignores.

For God's sake, the only interesting thing to come out of Canada in the last 20 years has been "The Kids In The Hall", and they're all cross-dressers. I once wore a kilt, doesn't that count?

As God Made Him

I would be the last to suggest that suicide is in any way an acceptable response to life, no matter how cruel, inhuman or hateful that life is. But in consideration for the life that God handed him, I cannot blame him for spitting on it and handing it back. Good for him.

Over at Catholic and Enjoying It!

Mark Shea, after posting a letter from Deal Hudson, is asking a rather pertinent question: "What exactly is the USCCB good for?"

That's a really good question. As a non-catholic, I can only offer my impressions, but they are hardly positive. The USCCB reminds me of nothing so much as group of men who tried to be Episcopalians, but failed. Men of no character and less conviction, except of course for those positions which engender peer approval. They are weak, castrated, non-men. Cowards, liars, equivocators, traitors, self-serving, degenerate, gluttons of arrogance and faux humility. Inhuman, vicious and perverse, deserving of nothing but contempt, exposure and ridicule. Above all, an excellent reason to say: "See, this is why I am not a Catholic -- look at the pack of rotting corpses I would have to bow down to."

Of course, I've heard the argument that the bishops aren't the church, that one shouldn't judge the church on the character of the bishops. To which, my response is that either they matter, or they don't. If they don't matter, then publically dispense with them. Denounce them as irrelevant and move on. If they do matter, then publically rebuke them. Not in print, but in public, face to face. God knows, there have been far too many secrets and these manlings have hidden behind the shield against detraction long enough.
